Oftentimes, when we get tired of the phone we are currently using and we need to change to a new one or get another phone in replacement, we tend to be confused about which one to go for.

Thousands of mobile phones are being produced daily and weekly by different mobile phone companies. With different phone brands available worldwide, each of the brands has its uniqueness.

In this post, I will show you the specifications to check before you purchase your next target of mobile phone to help you with your decision-making.

Ok, so let’s get started…

Operating System

Operating system often referred to as OS is the technology on which the mobile device was built. Currently, there are two OS to choose from – Android or IOS. IOS are basically Apple products like iPhone, while Android devices run on Android OS and comes in different version. So, the choice of your OS determines the type of mobile phone you will buy.

  • Click “About phone” and device info

Software and Integrated funtionality

A lot of functionalities are now being embedded in mobile devices like connectivity (3G,4G,5G), fingerprint, heart rate monitor, UV sensor and face capture e.t.c.

You should be aware of what functions your next phone should perform. Most smartphones now support 4G services, although 5G is now available but not currently supported in Nigeria as at the period of writing this post.

There are Fingerprint functionalities to lock and unlock devices which is another feature to consider. Face capture is also common with the smartphone in recent times in case of theft and bridge of security passwords.

Software versions should also be considered. The latest version of Android is version 11 and the latest version of IOS is 14.4.1 as of the period of writing this post. I will encourage you to go for the latest version of mobile phones available.

Camera Quality

Phone cameras are no doubt more like digital cameras because of their megapixels, hybrid autofocus, optical stabilization, special effects, and special selfie features.

The speed of auto focus, aperture and ISO levels are factors that produce good quality photos.

So if you are the type that loves taking pictures or you use your phone most time for video recording and snapping, a 16-24MP camera with an F/2.0 aperture or lower should produce a good result and be fine for you.

Storage Capacity

One of the most important features to look out for in a mobile phone is its storage capacity. Mobile phones have two kinds of memory – Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read-Only Memory(ROM). RAM along with the processor determines the speed of the phone. That is, a 3GB RAM will be faster than a 2GB or 1GB RAM phone.

The ROM which is usually referred to as the internal memory or storage is used to store phone apps and all the videos, photos, and music on the phone.

So it, therefore stands that phones with higher RAM will be faster and those with higher ROM (internal storage) will have more space to store.

If you are the kind of user who is likely to have plenty of Apps, plenty of photos, and videos, you should consider going for a phone with at least 3-4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory.

To check your phone memory

  • Go to “settings” on your phone
  • Click storage or memory depending on your phone.

Battery Life

A long-lasting battery always makes the phone worthwhile for use. Some mobile phone’s battery does not always last and you will need to power them several times in a day.

So if you are a heavy consumer of video-streaming apps or you like playing games on your mobile phone, you should consider a phone with at least 4000mAh or higher.

Although screens with a higher resolution consume more energy while the latest processors optimize battery life. Check the battery body at the back of your phone to see battery details. If you have less than 3500mAh, your battery capacity is weak.

Design & Display

Mobile phones are made by variety of manufacturers, so you have a variety of design to choose from. Some of the design element such as keyboard style, screen sizes, screen resolutions should be considered in choosing a mobile phone.

Most mobile phones today are touchscreen devices. Which means you can find a phone with screen sizes up to 6 inches in length which may be difficult to enter your pocket. But you have a good viewing experience.

Most mobile phones today are between 5 and 5.6 inches.

Screen resolution is also an important consideration because it refers to both the number and density of pixels on screen.

It means the higher the resolution, the clearer the image.

I’m definitely someone that will consider camera quality before anything else but storage is also important.
